Researchers believe there is strong evidence that a new field of medicine is saving lives. Telehealth, or telemedecine, is helping to redefine how hospitals deliver care, connecting patients to caregivers over the Internet, Intranet and telephone while saving lives by allowing hospitals to see more patients.
At the center of this new medical model is what the industry is calling the Tele-ICU. In a 2010 study of Tele-ICU at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), the authors showed a 31 percent relative mortality risk reduction in the study group (McCambridge et al., 2010).
